This primary bathroom was a classic 1990s builder-grade setup: a fiberglass shower insert yellowed with age, a platform tub that nobody used, a single-sink vanity with no counter space, and strip lighting above a frameless mirror. The homeowners wanted a space that felt like a hotel suite — calm, clean, and luxurious — without expanding the existing footprint.

We gutted the room to the studs and started fresh. The platform tub was removed entirely (the homeowners preferred a spacious walk-in shower to a tub they never used), and the freed square footage was absorbed into a 5×6-foot shower enclosure with a curbless entry, linear drain, and floor-to-ceiling 12×24 porcelain tile in a warm gray tone. The shower includes a rain head, a handheld on a slide bar, a fold-down teak bench, and two recessed niches with mitered-edge tile returns. Waterproofing is Schluter-Kerdi membrane throughout — every seam banded, every penetration sealed.

The vanity is a custom 72-inch double-sink unit in flat-panel walnut with a white quartz top. Wall-mounted faucets free up counter space. The mirrors are backlit LED with anti-fog pads wired to a dedicated switch. The floor is 2-inch hexagon porcelain with a soft matte finish that is slip-resistant even when wet. A Panasonic WhisperGreen exhaust fan — sized 30% above code minimum for the room’s cubic volume — vents to the exterior and runs on a humidity-sensor switch so it operates automatically after showers.
