This whole-house window and door replacement covered 18 openings in a 1970s two-story traditional in Woodland Hills. The original single-pane aluminum windows were drafty, difficult to operate, and responsible for an estimated 25–30% of the home’s annual heating and cooling load according to the pre-project energy audit. Three sliding glass doors had failed seals (visible condensation between panes) and two had tracks so worn the doors jumped the rail when operated.

We installed dual-pane, Low-E, argon-filled vinyl retrofit windows throughout — a cost-effective alternative to new-construction units that avoids disturbing the existing stucco and drywall returns. The Low-E coating (Cardinal LoĒ-366) reflects infrared heat while transmitting visible light, reducing solar heat gain by approximately 60% compared to clear glass — a meaningful number in the San Fernando Valley, where summer temperatures routinely top 95°F and air conditioning runs from June through October.

The three sliding glass doors were replaced with new-construction vinyl sliders with stainless-steel roller assemblies, multi-point locking hardware, and interlocks at the meeting rail for improved air sealing. Every rough opening received new self-adhered flashing tape at the sill and jambs before the unit was set, and the exterior was re-caulked with OSI Quad Max sealant after installation. Interior casing was replaced with painted poplar to match the home’s existing trim profile.

The result is a quieter, more comfortable home with measurably lower energy bills. The homeowners reported an immediate reduction in street-noise transmission and a noticeable improvement in temperature consistency between rooms — the two most common complaints the original single-pane units had created.
